Oh wait.

Cal just destroyed my world. Let's make this a real music blog. I'll make an attempt.

Let's start this with Broken Social Scene. Probably because of the new album coming out on May 4th.

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene

Alright. This album single-handedly convinced me to start listening to indie music. I've never really been able to fully...explain how they appeal to me, but now, after years of trying to expand my idea of what music really means, am I able to get this out. They figured out how to sing with instrumental, epic post-rock. There are so many bands that have real talent at playing gradiose, poppy, orchestral, even beautiful sound, but most of the time, they ruin the feeling they were trying to create with absolutely horrible vocals. It brought entropy and chaos into the mix of whatever they were attempting to forge, ruining the soundscape as a whole. Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning are incredibly talented musicians, and they are more than willing to work with anyone that compliment or resonate with their sound.

Why I Like Kid Cudi

I've become an avid fan of Kid Cudi for the past month or so, I think he's an original artist with a great sound. One phenomenon I've come across though is a large amount of people I've talked to who simply hate him. I don't fully understand why people hate him, but I definitely have a few reasons as to why you shouldn't.

Reason number one, he is a new genre. He didn't create it, but he definitely set the standard. He's basically a hybrid of psychedelic and hip hop. I'd compare it with Pet Sounds and Animal Collective, simply because of its originality. Kid Cudi isn't crazy like Brian Wilson, but he does blaze trails like him.
Reason number two, I really like his lyrics. They showcase the inner thoughts of an intelligent and successful musician. Its also interesting to hear what hip hop has to say on the world of psychedelics and exploring the mind. I also enjoy the fact that his upbringing shows up in his lyrics. He grew up losing his dad at a young age, and it obviously had a large impact on him. I also feel like you can hear the "zeitgeist" of America right now when you're listening to his lyrics.
Reason number three, I like how it sounds. It's just really catchy, and personally my favorite song is "Pursuit of Happiness".

I really like the attitude of this song. The imagery not so much, but he makes up for that in my final reason for liking Kid Cudi.
The artwork is great. I like the original but modern style.

Either way, get a copy of his album Man on the Moon and find out for yourself.

The Black Keys + Hip Hop = Blakroc

Genre: Mash-up/collaboration, Hip Hop, Garage
Year: 2009
RIYL: Mos Def, Raekwon, The Black Keys, Old Dirty Bastard, Ludacris

The Black Keys worked with a bunch of hip-hop artists to jump on-board the mashup bandwagon. It's actually pretty damn good.

Maybeshewill - Not For Want Of Trying

Genre: Post-rock, electronic.
Year: 2008
RIYL: From Monument To Masses, Giraffes? Giraffes!, 65daysofstatic

This band has rocked my world on many occasions. "Not For Want Of Trying" itself has a giant clip from Network that you should read as you listen.

Everybody knows things are bad, It's a depression.
Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job.
The dollar buys a nickel's worth...
banks are going bust...
shop-keepers keep a gun under the counter...
punks are running wild on the street and there's nobody anywhere that seems to know what to do.
And there's no end to it.

We know the air is unfit to breathe,
our food is unfit to eat...
we sit watching our T.V.s while some local newscaster tells us
that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes --
as if that's the way it's supposed to be!

We know things are bad; worse than bad.
They're crazy!
It's like everything, everywhere is going crazy.
So, we don't go out anymore;
we sit in the house and slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller and we say:
Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms, let me have my toaster and my T.V.
and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything - just leave us alone.

But I'm not gonna leave you alone...
I want you to get mad!

I don't want you to protest and I don't want you to riot or write your Congressman,
because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write.
I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians or the crime in the street.
All I know is that first you've got to get mad... you've got to say: I'm a human being,
Goddamn it, my life has value!

I want you to get up now,
I want all of you to get up out of your chairs.
I want you to get up, right now, and go to the window,
open it and stick your head out and yell:

I'M AS MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!
